Curriculum architecture design leading to modular curriculum to develop targeted performance competencies in Air Traffic Management and Technical Operations Training. The goal of this project is to create a concept for curriculum architecture design that will demonstrate the feasibility of deploying modular and reusable curriculum in a variety of learning modalities. Our team proposes to investigate the current practices surrounding curriculum architecture and curriculum development with the ultimate objective of helping the FAA to explore a curriculum architecture that will support modular curriculum development. We refer to curriculum architecture design as the systems and processes around instructional systems design that relate performance models with curricular development. Curriculum architecture design supports the needs of the business through mapping performance models to curriculum. The best scenario would be a curriculum architecture design that supports the development and deployment of modular curriculum design that maps directly to the FAA job task management system.
Expected Project Outcomes:
The goal of this project is to create a concept for curriculum architecture design that will demonstrate the feasibility of deploying modular and reusable curriculum in a variety of learning modalities.
- Map existing training delivery system encompassing processes from job-task identification through training delivery and feedback.
- Map new processes to address any gaps identified through mapping the process.
- Develop a curriculum architecture design that will facilitate modular curriculum development.
VALUE OF RESEARCH:
If the project findings are implemented, the Air Traffic Organization (ATO) will need to mitigate several issues found with the current curriculum architecture. These fixes primarily require that the ATO ensure that existing practices and process are followed, that gaps in the implementation of the existing policies and procedures are addressed, and that future policies and procedures maintain consistency with the identified best practices.
If the project recommendations are implemented, the ATO will be able to move forward with confidence in implementing quality curriculum in a modular design environment. This would enable the ATO to identify opportunities to reuse and redeploy training assets, identify waste in training and development, rapidly deploy consistent training modules, and ensure quality and excellence through the implementation of best practices.
If follow-on projects are pursued, the ATO will be able to establish competency-based learning that would drive further efficiencies within the training environment. Stackable credentials would allow the ATO to conceptualize, develop, deploy, maintain and track discrete training elements.
