Research in Analytics  involves the development of data analytics tools and applications to collect, manage, and analyze data from curricula, training performance records, and other sources to develop improved training solutions and enhanced operational performance metrics.

The Analytics projects and the respective outcomes are:

Air Traffic & Tech Operations Job Task Analysis Workbooks Database: Microsoft Access database prototype that supports user-friendly queries, reports, export capability. Project completed. 

AJI-2 Customer Satisfaction Process: Enhanced approach to learning evaluations products and services to maximize customer satisfaction. Project completed. 

AJW-3 Fleet Assessment/Modernization Study: The project entailed identifying best fleet mix to support all FAA’s four missions by acquiring/leasing new and pre-owned aircraft. Some of the goals of the fleet replacement strategy included incorporating new technologies, reducing fleet diversity and providing more flight capacity for missions. Project completed. 

AJW-3 Fleet Assessment Phase II: In the second phase of AJW-3 Fleet Assessment/Modernization Study, the team is working on multiple tasks to help the FAA for a smooth transition to integrate new fleet and phase out the old ones. Some of these tasks include operation efficiency, manpower planning and maintenance planning. In both of these phases, the team continues to adopt a variety of data analytics tools including optimization, simulation and data analyses models.

Analysis of Technical Operations Job Tasks: Open source/no cost prototype automation tool to identify gaps and depth of coverage using multiple search techniques and report format to display results to reduce duplication of training on job functions with goal of reducing time required to prepare reports related to gaps and depth of coverage for job tasks in training materials.  Project completed.

Benchmark Premier Technical Training Providers: Based on insights from external industries (e.g., medical, technical), actionable best practices with the benchmark metrics, tools, processes to improve ATC and ATSS technical training.  Project completed.

Comprehensive Aircraft Fleet Study and System Optimization: Comprehensive strategy, including simulation models, to optimize Flight Program Operations’ fleet composition and location to meet mission needs and requirements of Flight Program Operations customers. Project completed.

Curriculum Architecture Gap Analysis: Prototype system for gap analysis based on integrated indices of job tasks and course contents to pre-process data to reduce unnecessary duplication of training on job functions and significantly reduce time required to prepare reports related to gaps and depth of coverage for job tasks in training materials using data-driven approach with minimal human involvement. Project completed.

Feasibility Study of Flight Inspection Aided By UAS-Based Sensing and Calibration: Recommended improvements to measurement accuracy of signal strength on BE-300PL and CL-605 flight inspection aircraft, accomplished through four-dimensional modeling and simulation of antenna reception patterns for Localizer, Glideslope, Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Range (VOR), and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) antennas. This supports accurate coverage determinations for VOR Minimum Operational Network (VORMON) program and new standalone DME facilities.  Project completed.

ILS Zone 3 Measurement: Demonstrate the feasibility of performing in-air, high resolution ILS signal integrity inspection using a low-cost UAS platform to support technical training and lead to the development of a portable, cost-effective method of inspecting and evaluating the integrity of operational ILS signals.

Learner Data Management: Means for facilitating collection, storage, and analysis of learning training data via online and mobile applications.  Project completed.

Technical Training Knowledge Architecture: Recommended type of knowledge architecture and existing knowledge-base systems to fit the need to allow workforce to search for resources and information connected to their training program, but in a context of performance support. Project completed. 

Ultra Lightweight VORILS Receiver: Develop a novel, low cost, size, weight and power C-SWaP navigational receiver to reduce operational and training costs for navigational flight inspection (FI) operations.
